Derma Rolling for Beard Growth

When it comes to skincare development over the last few years, we’ve seen so many changes that people don’t even need to visit a professional. A great example is derma rolling. As so many people can now carry out procedures that were once reserved for the dermatologist's office in the comfort of their own home, a derma roller should be something that you need in your life, especially if you have a patchy beard and you’re looking to stimulate a full beard! Let's show you everything you need to know about derma rolling, and why the men may need it more!

What Does a Derma Roller Do?

A derma roller is a small device with a little wheel that contains hundreds of small titanium needles that puncture the skin. If you’ve heard of micro-needling, this works in the same way, but on a more homely, DIY level. Think of it as your own little dermatologist!

Derma rollers have many different uses, but people mainly opt for a derma roller to improve pigmentation problems and improve the surface of their skin. Anyone with fine lines, hyperpigmentation, or those dreaded acne scars uses derma rolling as part of a regular skincare regime, but it can also work for people who want to stimulate facial hair growth.

A derma roller works to stimulate collagen production, which is a natural protein our body produces that, over time, can diminish, making our skin lose its elasticity. Microneedling sessions can promote a massive rise in collagen, resulting in firmer skin. Derma rollers penetrate deeper than traditional skin products to produce that skin everyone lusts after as we get older!

How Does a Derma Roller Work?

The micro-needling process causes trauma to the outside layer of the skin, so when you apply a derma roller to your skin, this starts to promote the healing process because the hundreds of tiny needles create microscopic pathways in the skin. While your skin’s barriers are down, this is your time to strike, and use rejuvenating serums in these areas, resulting in a deeper level of absorption and can produce long-lasting effects.

Lots of people use derma rolling, and while most people might think that rolling needles over their face is not the most comfortable experience, it is a far less invasive alternative to microneedling. The trick in getting it to work properly is using it in combination with a high-end product, such as our Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, giving you a double whammy of derma dosage!

The Benefits of Using a Derma Roller

If you have been considering an at-home treatment like a derma roller, there are many benefits everyone can benefit from:

It’s Safe and Non-Invasive

The great thing about using at-home treatments like a derma roller is that you can do it in the comfort of your own home with no fuss! So many people think that if they want to get the benefits of micro-needling or skincare treatment, they’ve got to get their butt out the door to a professional.

As you can do it at home, there is minimal risk of side effects. But with any skincare regime, the worst-case side effects are mild. Usually, this is because people aren't using a derma roller properly or not being hygienic. Common side effects are irritation, peeling, and bruising, but we’ll get “under the skin” of this later, and show you that most of it is completely normal!

It Stimulates Collagen and Elastin

Collagen and elastin are the two most common proteins found in the body. Collagen is found in tendons, fats, and ligaments, and is what glues our body together. Elastin is the protein that gives our skin its bounce. If you do the skin test and pinch a bit of your skin on the back of your hand and it doesn’t bounce back quickly, this means you don't have much elastin in your skin!

Collagen and elastin work together to create a rejuvenating powerhouse that gives your skin its youthful texture and shape, and boosting collagen in the body is a shortcut to achieving that youthful look. You can use our hyaluronic acid serum to get you started, but derma rollers penetrate the skin by creating those micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin on a much deeper level.

These injuries stimulate elastin and collagen production into overdrive, and as it heals your complexion will be tighter and plumper. When you use micro-needling techniques like a derma roller in combination with serums such as our Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, you are ramping up the ingredient absorption, which will work wonders for your skin by bringing nutrients to the desired area, which is vital when it comes to promoting healthy beard growth!

Improves Your Skin Texture

Derma rolling is a great tool to improve aesthetic issues that may have been plaguing you for years. If you have acne scars, fine lines, or any form of hyperpigmentation, derma rolling could be the tool that you need.

If you are feeling self-conscious because of the acne scars that have stuck with you for life, micro-needling in the form of a derma roller can, if used regularly, provide an increase in collagen that smooths out your skin.

Derma rollers are creating these tiny pathways with short needles, so it's important that while you've got a gateway to the layer underneath your skin, you use the right products. Our shop ensures you get the right combination of tools to get your most glowing skin.

Enhances Skincare Product Absorption

Because our derma roller can penetrate the skin by creating those micro holes, it's important to follow this up with the right products. Ensuring that you have a solid skincare regimen with products such as our Hyaluronic Acid Serum, our anti-aging Vitamin C Facial Day Cream, or our Cosmedica Instant Glow Kit means you can get to work instantly.

It’s Great for Your Sense of Self

Of course, despite all these benefits of using a derma roller, probably the biggest benefit you will experience is how you feel about yourself. If you've been self-conscious over the years because of acne or hyperpigmentation, over time, it does eat away at your sense of self. We’ve all been there!

No matter how hard we try, we can't seem to get our skin as youthful as we would like. This is where derma rolling could be the solution to aid you with a skincare regime that will, over time, make you feel fantastic about yourself, especially if you’ve been struggling to get that thicker, fuller beard all your friends have!

Why Men Need a Derma Roller in Their Life

It Stimulates Beard Growth

We've already talked about the benefits of collagen, but collagen does not only boost the skin, it can also stimulate hair follicle cells. As collagen is a collection of amino acids, the hair follicle cells use collagen to create what is known as keratin proteins, which work to promote hair growth and make it stronger. When it comes to stimulating hair growth, it’s vital for that area to have healthy circulation, and a derma roller may be the secret ingredient to boosting hair growth.

When using a product like our Cosmedica Derma Roller System, it's essential to use it in conjunction with a supplementary product. Many guys use beard oil to moisturize and soften their beard hair as well as benefit the skin beneath the beard. Looking after your manly mane is a full-time job all in itself, so, if you want to get that beard looking fine and refined, using a derma roller can get your beard to that next level!

It's Great for Ingrown Hairs

Many men suffer from ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs occur when hair that's been removed starts to grow back, curving into the skin. Working hard to maintain your beard's angularness is a major task, and when you start to see those red bumps on the skin or see hairs trapped under the skin with those almost purply bumps, it can be another obstacle to overcome to get that amazing beard.

A derma roller can reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs by promoting healthier beard growth. Using a derma roller in conjunction with a moisturizer, beard oil, as well as a few little lifestyle adjustments, such as improving circulation by exercising more and consuming a balanced diet, can all work together to create that awesome beard.

It Could Make You Look Younger-Ish!

If you are using a beard to cover up a multitude of sins, especially when it comes to aging, it's a tactic that might have served you well thus far, but while a big, full, healthy beard is a great distraction tactic, you’ve got to tackle the problem at hand! If you've got wrinkles on the forehead or a lot of those fine lines and acne scars, sorry guys, the beard distraction technique may only work for a little while longer, so it’s time to step up your skincare regime game!

Derma rolling is an amazing tool to help you improve the appearance and texture of your skin and possibly make you look younger-ish. As it stimulates collagen and elastin, this smooths over those fine lines and wrinkles that you might have thought were just a natural part of aging. But while derma rolling starts the stimulation process, it’s only when you incorporate a skincare regime into your beard care regime that you’ll see superior results!

Using products like our Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum after derma rolling ensures you are giving your skin the nutrients it needs to wage an all-out war on your signs of aging! We all want to look a little bit younger, and while that beard is a key to your ruggedness, you might benefit from taking a few of those wrinkles away by smoothing out your skin. Collagen is not just an amazing tool to help you look younger, but collagen will also work as the glue for your tendons and ligaments, which could help you in the exercise stakes as well!

It Needs to Be Part of Your Skincare Routine

“Do you even skincare bro?” If you are looking to grow a fuller and healthier beard, you've got to think about how you can look after your beard and your skin better. It's something that many men don't consider until it's almost too late. We've already talked about the benefits of having more collagen and elastin to get firmer skin, but so many men are shy when it comes to having a skincare routine. Perhaps it's time for us men to use tools like Cosmedica’s Derma Roller System and start taking care of ourselves a bit more?

So many of us think that we shouldn't be dabbling in all this type of stuff, but the fact is that whether you’ve got a significant other in your life or you’re carefree, there’ll be a lot more respect if you start taking care of yourself. It's easy to let the ravages of time impact us, but instead, let's see if we can beat Old Mother Time at her own game, and grow a great beard while we’re at it!

A skincare routine is beneficial for so many reasons, but as men produce four times as much sebum as women, which can cause an incredibly oily face, a solid skincare routine by using preventative skincare products can help combat everything, from wrinkles to fine lines and breakouts. Sebum is an oily substance that protects your skin from drying out, but you can have excess sebum for a number of different reasons, including hormonal imbalances, genetics, or even exercising too much. You can combat this by using a hydrating product such as our hyaluronic acid serum and a cleanser, such as our Vitamin C Facial Cleanser, to remove excess oil.

Let's face it, self-care is more important than ever. Men can easily poo-poo the idea of looking after themselves. But if you are seen to be looking after yourself, you are going to be far more respected! It can work wonders to help you grow a beard, but let’s take this opportunity to look at everything we see in the mirror!

How to Use Your Derma Roller

So many people use a derma roller to rejuvenate their skin and beards, but there are many people who don't know how to use it properly. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Disinfect the roller by soaking it in 70% isopropyl alcohol for between 5 and 10 minutes.

2. Cleanse your face with a pH-balanced cleanser, such as our 2.5% Glycolic Facial Scrub, and wipe your face with 70% isopropyl alcohol if you are using needles longer than 0.5 millimeters.

3. Apply numbing cream if necessary. Some people have a very low pain threshold, but you might want to invest in some numbing cream if you are using needles over 1 mm in length, as micro needles of 1 mm and longer can draw blood. Follow the instructions and wipe it all off before you start derma rolling.

4. Start derma rolling

Whether you are derma rolling just on the beard areas or looking to boost your skin in the process, it's important to avoid the eye area completely, commonly referred to as the orbital (or eye sockets) area. This also means avoiding the semicircle under the eyes and avoiding the area in between your eyes and eyebrows.

When rolling, make sure it is in one direction and do it four times, lifting the roller off your face between each roll, as this prevents scarring that can look like tram tracks. After rolling in the same place, adjust the derma roller and repeat until you've covered the target area you're treating.

Once you've rolled in one direction, you need to go back over the area, but repeat the process perpendicularly. So if you rolled the side of your face vertically, you now need to repeat the rolling horizontally. Be careful if you plan on rolling diagonal lines, as this can create an uneven distribution and place more stress on that area.

When applying the derma roller to bearded areas, such as your cheeks, puffing out your cheeks provides a firmer surface for the roller, and only provide as much pressure as you need for the needles to pierce the surface of the skin.

5. Wash your face with water, but with no special serums or face washes at this point.

6. Clean and disinfect your derma roller with a soapy water mix and vigorously shake the roller around the water without any excessive force that may damage it. You then need to disinfect the roller by letting it soak in alcohol for around ten minutes before putting it back in its case and storing it.

What You Need to Remember When Using Your Derma Roller

Know How Often You Should Derma Roll

When we use a derma roller, we have to use our best judgment and make sure that our skin is completely recovered from the previous session. How often you use a derma roller will depend on the size of the needles. As a general rule, you should use a derma roller accordingly based on the needle length, more often with smaller needles and less often with larger needles:

●     0.25 mm every other day.

●     0.5 mm between 1 and 3 times per week.

●     1 mm every 10 to 14 days.

●     1.5 mm once every 3 to 4 weeks.

●     2 mm once every 6 weeks.

Knowing When You Shouldn't Use a Derma Roller

While for most people, using a derma roller is not invasive as long as you use the right technique and the right skincare regime, there are some mistakes people make when they're using a derma roller:

Not practicing proper hygiene, so be sure to soak your derma roller in isopropyl alcohol and be strict with your cleaning regimes to minimize the spread of germs around the skin.

Do not use it if you have irritated skin, so if you have any skin irritation, fungal skin, active acne, or conditions like rosacea or psoriasis, you should not use it. As great as beards look, if we don’t maintain them, they can be a breeding ground for germs that can fester on the skin. If you have any concerns with your skin condition or have sensitive skin in general, consult a dermatologist or if there's any skin sensitivity when using the derma roller, stop using it right away and consult your skin specialist or doctor.

Be careful if you are using retinol products or have sunburn, and discontinue retinol use five days before you start micro-needling to minimize any adverse reactions. It is possible to use a derma roller when you have sunburn, but you should avoid using it on the affected areas.

Know What to Expect After Using a Derma Roller on Your Face

After using a derma roller, your skin could be red for a couple of hours, have mild swelling, and potentially bleed. These are very common things to expect after micro-needling. The plumping effect you see will disappear after a few days, and there can be minor redness for around two to three days where the skin will start peeling. At this point, you should not pick at it, and the peeling will fall off naturally.

Repeated Rolling Will Bring the Best Results

When using your derma roller, the best course of action is to stick to a regime. If you are looking for smoother or firmer skin, or you want to stimulate that beard hair growth you've been lusting after for so long, persistence is key!

Ensuring that you make regular time to roll will bring about the best results, and after you finish your rolling, use your desired skincare product, whether it's our 100% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum or facial scrub or the beard growth oil or beard balm you normally use. You have the benefit of these micro-tears that allow our products to penetrate deeper into the skin, which will give you that youthful glow and stimulate the beard you've always wanted.

A derma roller is an amazing tool that, let’s face it, we should all have in our lives. Continuing to use it will always deliver better results, and over time, you will see its positive impact on your skin and beard quality.
