Skin Conditions - Pigmentation

What is it?

Hyper-pigmentation is a localized increase in the natural color of the skin.  Most often due to over-exposure to the sun, it is a common condition that becomes increasingly prevalent as we age.  Usually harmless, hyper-pigmentation results from increased melanin deposits in a particular area of the skin.  These areas are often called age spots or liver spots and most commonly occur on the face and hands.

Another potential cause of hyper-pigmentation includes hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy, when using birth control, or during menopause.  In these cases, the highly pigmented areas are usually a bit larger than when caused by the sun and are called melasma spots.

Other causes of pigmentation exist, but the treatment regimen is the same.

What can be done about it?

As with many other age-signs, some pigmentation is unavoidable.  It’s the natural result of aging.  That being said, Cosmedica Skincare is committed to helping you age gracefully, and there are thing that can be done to prevent pigmentation issues.

First, protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun.  Always use sunscreen when sun exposure is a possibility.

Second, nourish your skin.  As you grow older, your skin cells become less active, and the skin’s natural desquamation and regeneration process slows, leading to more severe pigmentation issues.  Exfoliate regularly to promote skin cell proliferation, and nourish your skin with the hydration it needs to enhance skin cell activity with Cosmedica Hyaluronic Acid Serum.  The healthier your skin is, the less likely you are to suffer from pigmentation issues.

Third, treat your hyper-pigmentation.  Cosmedica Multi-Active Night Cream features active ingredients that lift away age spots for a more even complexion.  At the same time, natural botanicals and vitamin C brighten the skin for a uniformly brilliant complexion.
